From an outlying village in Cilacap – Middle Java we crossed the regional boundaries and moved away to Jakarta, the metropolitan of Indonesia.

We make living as street artist, dance and sing popular songs but the rhythm is arranged as pop-traditional music. We use traditional music equipments as well as modern one.
We cross the cultural boundary.

In the middle of city crowd, self-individualism urban society, we walk around city alleys wearing traditional clothes called kebaya instead of living in countryside society moderation.
We cross social community.

We are Margo Budoyo, the road of culture.

jogja earthquake

5:55 a.m., it has to be a bright early day by reading a newspaper, listening to the singing birds , having a cup of coffee, breathing the fresh air, be ready to fill out the day. But saturday morning on May 27, 2006 in Yogyakarta and its surrounding was not such that way. By that time, an earthquake measuring 5,9 on Richter scale rattled the province known as the Javanese culture centre. The worst aftermath caused by the quake mostly in Bantul and Klaten. In both regions, the confirmed death toll has passed 5.000 from at least 6.400 total casualties.

Our sense of solidarity is again tested.

Dim light and noisy surroundings, but when they spell alphabet or when they answer the teacher’s question they are louder than cars, trucks and other vehicles that passing by around them.
This school is located in Ancol - North Jakarta, under the concrete of elevated harbor free way. Founded in 1996 by Mrs. Sri Rosiyanti(56) and her twin sister Mrs. Iriyaningsih (56), around 350 students study in this school from kindergarten to 6th grade elementary school without paying any tuition.
The ability to read and write is a basic need in globalization era nowadays. When the capitalism of education system created high cost education and ignored these children need, the twins didn’t give it up. Both, they fund and manage this school by themselves and also from donations.
These two sisters have been struggling to obtain a land from local government for permanent and proper school building they want to build. But until the time these pictures were taken, on the Children National day (23rd of July 2005), there hasn't been any answers from the government yet.

On Monday, 23^rd April 2006 an international music show was held in Jakarta, but this time it wasn’t a rock or jazz concert , a singer either. This time, an international reputable Disc Jockey known as Tiesto performed himself in the booming of house music rhythm.

The show named “In Search of Sunrise – Asia Tour” was presented  in Carnaval Beach – Ancol, in purpose to promote his new album with the same title as the show.  The DJ’s real name is Tijs Verwest from Netherland.  His show in Indonesia was the last of his serial show in Asia including Japan, China, Korea, Hongkong, Thailand, Singapore and Philipine. In Indonesia, he also performed in Bali and Parangtritis Beach – Jogjakarta, but the last one was cancelled, due to official reason of the heavy rain.
The interesting side of  this show was the large number of the crowd. With the ticket prize was about Rp. 200.000/person, the show that went on from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. was approximately attended by 28.000 people. This show also caused traffic jam around Ancol recreation area and increased hotels occupation rate around Ancol distric, because many of them booked hotel a month before the show.
It was the largest number of crowd in this Asia serial show. In his site, the DJ himself admitted that he was surprised with the experience he got in Jakarta.

Maybe he could be more surprised if he knew that the number of crowd is inversely proportional with Indonesian economy that haven’t put on its feet yet after crisis several years ago. Not to mention the porn bill rumors, women mostly wore tank top, tight fitting shirt, mini skirt and even bikini.

Certainly, it became a special interesting show and the porn bill that had been shouted about so many times means nothing.
